Setting a fitness goal

It’s come to that time of year again where my mum, sister and I will take part in the 5k Race for Life to raise money for cancer research. This year is slightly different as my two-year old niece will be taking part too. Although its entitled Race for Life you are able to walk, jog or run and as my niece will be taking part we will be at the back of the walking section so I doubt I will shave much time if any off of my previous years time. As the charity race is only next weekend I’ve been doing my part to get my sponsors which has led me to wonder whether I could ever run an entire 5k.

I’ve been pretty obsessed with the idea of being able to run long distances for a few years now. Although I’m around 115lbs away from my ideal weight I’m more than capable of walking a 5k and more than likely a 10k. Apart from the fact I currently can’t run for more than about 10 seconds without gasping for air I’m determined that I’m going to compete in a 5k and run the entire distance.

Considering how unfit and overweight I am it may surprise you (it even surprises myself sometimes) that my partner is in fact a really fit person, he isn’t the healthiest person as a result of what he eats but he manages to keep slim because of his activity levels. After being in the Army for ten years he picked a few things up. So I have convinced him that we should start running together (this has taken over three years of living together to achieve) and better still I have decided to appoint him my running coach.

Now after spending around two hours in the Nike Store in Bluewater he finally kitted himself out in some ‘fashionable’ and in some cases neon coloured apparel. Yes…neon. Oh and did I forget to mention he purchased some support boxers or as I like to call them…budgey smugglers. I, myself, decided to stick with more tame clothing and purchased a pair of slim fit capri’s.

Tonight is our first training session and… I’m pretty excited!
